Thanking our community partners – the 2025 gathering

Thanking our public contributors and community partners - the PHWE 2025 gathering

People in Health West of England host a community gathering every year. These thank you events are an opportunity to recognise the contributions members of the public make to research. They are designed to be relaxed and welcoming and are typically held in community-based venues to promote inclusivity. They offer a chance to learn about research happening across our region, connect with others, and enjoy informal social interaction.

The 2025 event was held in Trinity Arts Centre on 24 September 2025 between 11am and 3pm and comprised talks by:

  • Caafi Health Ambassadors Zia Haque and Samina Baig
  • Liz Jestico of the Create for Confidence project, and
  • Jonathan Aning, a urological surgeon who works closely with local charity Friends Caswell Thompson, which raises awareness about prostate cancer in the BAME communities in Bristol and its surrounding towns and villages, with a particular focus on Black men.

Catering was supplied by local East African caterers Jikoni and entertainment was provided by the Dovetail Ensemble Bristol. The event finished with an interactive quiz with prizes awarded at the end.

The events acknowledge the efforts of members of the public in engaging with health and care research, going above and beyond to make a difference. They might have had a negative experience, and they are re-living their experience to make things better for others. These demonstrate the research community’s appreciation beyond payment.
